Description

Signer of the Declaration of Independence from Maryland (1737–1832) who was the last survivor among his colleagues. ALS signed “Ch. Carroll of Carrollton,” one page both sides, 8 x 9.75, April 24, 1820. Carroll writes from Annapolis to Richard Caton, Esq. In part: “Mr. & Mrs. Patterson left me Saturday morning at 6 o’clock…. I wrote to Mr. Harper yesterday & inclosed my letter to him in one to Mr. Neilson sent by this day’s packet…. Please to tell him I delivered this day to Mr. Lynch the clock I made & the two deeds to Mr. Patterson…. The following lands are mortgaged to me…. Give my love to my daughters and affectionate remembrance to Mrs. Harper….” The integral address leaf has been inlaid to a slightly larger sheet. In very good condition, with complete, expertly restored vertical tear (touching one letter of surname), marginal piece of tape lightly touching salutation, and marginal glue attachment of letter to address leaf.
