Description

Darwin declines an invitation five days before receiving his honorary degree from Cambridge, one of his proudest moments

English naturalist and author (1809–1882) whose book explaining his theories of evolution, On the Origin of the Species by Means of Natural Selection (1859), takes a place among the most influential texts in the history of scientific thought. LS, one page both sides, 5 x 8, Down, Beckham, Kent letterhead, November 12, 1877. Darwin very politely declines an invitation from Mr. Clark. In full, “I thank you cordially for your very kind letter, and I hope that you will express to the President how much obliged I am for the honour of his invitation. I should have enjoyed extremely accepting it, but I really cannot, for I am not able to spend an evening even at home without lying down to rest, and after the excitement of the day I shall be much tired.” Signed at the conclusion, “Charles Darwin.” Tape along left edge of front of letter and a touch of toning, otherwise fine condition. LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
