Belly up! Bryan recruits prohibition supporters: “There is always need of efficient workers and I would suggest that you get in touch with the Dry Federations of St. Louis, with the anti-Saloon League.”

American statesman and lawyer (1860–1925) who, among other accomplishments, was a three-time Democratic presidential candidate, served as Wilson’s Secretary of State, and participated in the celebrated Scopes “Monkey Trial” of 1925. TLS signed “W. J. Bryan,” one page, 8.5 x 11, January 6, 1917. Letter to a gentleman looking to join the prohibition movement. In part, “I have read your letter with much interest and can readily see your deep interest in the prohibition cause. There is always need of efficient workers and I would suggest that you get in touch with the Dry Federations of St. Louis, with the anti-Saloon League, with the Prohibition party, with the W.T.C.U., with the Dry Democrats, in fact with any organization which is working for this reform.” In very good condition, with intersecting mailing folds, one between signature and scattered toning.
