Description

Spreading American values worldwide: “I hope that the torch of freedom of conscience we have raised for our own guidance may ever diffuse its rays more widely”

TLS, one page, 7 x 9, White House letterhead, May 29, 1937. Roosevelt writes to Antonio Gonzalez, American Minister to Ecuador. In part: “It is a matter of peculiar satisfaction to learn through your letter … that any thing I said in my Buenos Aires address enunciating the principle of the constitutional right of freedom of religion has been helpful to President Paez in the negotiations in which he has been engaged. I hope that the torch of freedom of conscience which as a nation we have raised for our own guidance may ever diffuse its rays more widely that its glory may be seen from afar. We in this country shall never suffer that light to grow dim.” In very good condition, with light soiling and toning, file and staple holes, and a touch of wrinkling. The signature is bold and dark. LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
