Description

Pure genius! Einstein works his Theory of Relativity with quantum mechanics

Three incredible pages of Einstein’s calculations and notes, in both pencil and ink, on two 8.5 x 11 off-white sheets, having to do with his attempt to reconcile the Special Theory of Relativity with quantum mechanics. The intricate and detailed equations and notations (in German) appear to be an approach to a quantum theory of gravity, based on the approaches used for quantum electrodynamics via an expansion of the metric tensor, which is consistent with the work Einstein was doing at the end of his career. The history of this work goes something like this: Einstein’s early work dealt with special relativity, where the speed of light as a constant of nature led to the concept that ‘simultanaeity’ had to be abandoned. About 15 years later, the idea of general relativity was developed, where a curvature of space-time is the manifestation of gravity. All of this is considered classic physics, without quantum mechanics, a concept that Einstein resisted. Over the next decade, the concept of quantum field theory, which deals with special relativity and quantum mechanics being made consistent, developed. This was later picked up after World War II to create a consistent quantum field theory of electromagnetism. Einstein was working on a formulation for a viable theory of quantum gravity based on the techniques that were successful for the quantum field theory of electromagnetism. Also included is a transmittal letter from Einstein’s daughter, Margaret, who submitted these papers to noted graphologist Thea Stein Lewison. A Harvard professor of physics was very helpful in deciphering the meaning of the equations. Several horizontal and heavier vertical mailing folds, otherwise fine condition. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
