DEFEATED AGAIN: En route back to America, a frustrated DAVIS reports on his futile efforts to raise funds for the Mississippi Valley Society, writing, “My long detention is London was without any satisfaction”

President of the Confederacy. ALS, three pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.5 x 7, November 24, 1876. Letter written while aboard the S. S. Adriatic, concerning his efforts in Europe on behalf of the Mississippi Valley Society. In part: “Our friend has informed you by cablegram of my departure from Liverpool, although I informed him that only in New Orleans could we enter upon useful discussion of the affairs of the M. V. S…. My long detention in London was without any satisfaction of the International Chamber of Commerce and the Miss. V. Society in London.” Davis had gone to Europe on behalf of the Southern Planters to attain financial support and a market for Southern goods. However, the English bankers were probably not too receptive as they still had worthless Confederate bonds. In fine condition, with light toning and expected mailing folds.
