#112 - Albert Einstein Typed Letter Signed Estimate: $5,000+

"A few months ago Szilard, Harrison Brown and myself celebrated the funeral of the Emergency Committee of Atomic Scientists"

TLS signed “A. Einstein,” one page, 8.25 x 10.5, blindstamped personal Princeton letterhead, December 29, 1951. Letter to noted collector Joseph H. Schaffner in New York City, in full: "Your delicious gift reminds me that we are still living in a happy country with kindhearted souls in it. I thank you heartily and I am sending my best wishes for the New Year to you and yours…P.S. A few months ago Szilard, Harrison Brown and myself celebrated the funeral of the Emergency Committee of Atomic Scientists. It is a pity that you were not present." Beautifully double-matted and framed with a plaque and photograph to an overall size of 23.75 x 20.25. In fine condition, with light overall wrinkling.

Joseph Halle Schaffner served as an executive director of the Emergency Committee of Atomic Scientists, which Einstein had founded with fellow physicist Leo Szilard in 1946 to warn the public of the dangers associated with the development of nuclear weapons, promote the peaceful use of nuclear energy, and work towards world peace. Although the organization was gradually disbanded beginning in 1950 and officially dissolved on October 10, 1951, most of its members continued to speak out against nuclear proliferation. In addition to his work in this arena, Schaffner was a noteworthy collector of scientific and literary manuscripts, assembling a museum-quality collection that included the correspondence and writings of Isaac Newton, Charles Darwin, Marie and Pierre Curie, Albert Einstein, and more.
