Description

Spanish-American War–era hardtack biscuit identified on the front in pencil: "M. L. Diehl, Co. A, 8 Regt., Camp Meade, Middletown, P.A." In very good to fine condition, with some minor crumbling.

Prepared with flour and water, hardtack were commonly given to soldiers for food since they lasted a long time and were inexpensive; they were also very difficult to break or bite, thus the name. Camp George G. Meade near Middletown, Pennsylvania, was a camp established and subsequently abandoned by the U.S. Volunteers during the Spanish–American War.
