French chemist and entrepreneur (1838-1914) from the island of Corsica best known as the inventor of the first coca wine, Vin Mariani, an alcoholic beverage combining wine with cocaine. This tonic wine has been described as the ancestor of Coca-Cola. Scarce ALS in French, signed “A. Mariani,” two pages on two adjoining sheets, 5 x 6.75, personal monogrammed letterhead (with Imperial Century watermarks), October 22, 1905. Handwritten letter to a close friend, who seemed a bit overwhelmed by age and depressed by the passing of life, in part: (translated): “On my side I could tell you so much, and therefore I console myself in thinking that those who die young, are dispensed from making such complaint. If the years weigh on our body until they crush it, they don't succeed to make our heart cold…I will forward you some bottles of my Coca Wine, with two glasses decorated with Coca leaves, in which you will drink my wine.” Later he announces the publication of the tenth volume of his celebrated “Mariani Album.” In fine condition. The first signed item from Mariani that we have ever offered.
