Deke Slayton's early handwritten testing notes on the status of Redstone rockets, with updates from German scientists Wernher von Braun, Joachim Kuettner, and Heinz-Hermann Koelle

Early handwritten notes in pencil by Deke Slayton from the late 1950s, early 1960s, with content relating to the testing of rockets from the Redstone family, unsigned, five total pages 8 x 10.5, which begins with a page headed “Control & Guidance – Redstone,” which reads below, in part: “53 Redstones fired, 11 failures / 2 due to errors in adjusting control system / 1 due to rough combustion (Blew 10 sec. Off pad) / 2 fire in aft section causing loss of control / 1 nose cone failed to separate… / 1 yaw axis control inoperative - drifted out of control.” The remaining pages feature Slayton’s handwritten on work conducted by noted German engineers and rocket scientists Wernher von Braun, Joachim Kuettner, and Heinz-Hermann Koelle.

Examples include: “Von Braun / Juno-2, NASA satellite probes of approx. 100 payload mod. Jupiter booster using Explorer 2nd stage / Redstone-Mercury booster - Mod w/ more fuel, alcohol & O2 fueled”; “Dr. Kuettner / Redstone profile / 5.5 G, Mach 5.9, 203,000 at cut off / Alt. 667,000´, Mach 7.75, 5.5 min weightless”; “Mr. Koelle / Future Projects / Saturn I - 8 Jupiter 1st stage, Titan 2nd stage, 1,500,000 / Saturn II - 2,000,-000 / Nova - 6,000,000.” The last two pages feature Slayton’s notes from a “Lt. Hornsby” on Redstone and Jupiter tests. In very good condition, with creasing and staining, not affecting readability.
