Description

Head of the Catholic Church and ruler of the Papal States from October 1534 to his death in November 1549. In that role, he commissioned Michelangelo to oversee the building of St. Peter's Basilica and paint the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, excommunicated King Henry VIII of England, approved the decree establishing the order of the Jesuits, and convened the Council of Trent. Vellum manuscript document in Latin, one page, 20 x 15, circa 1530s–40s. Untranslated papal bull issued under Pope Paul III, with his leaden seal (bulla) on its original entwined cords displayed above. Signed by various Church officials, the document concerns the Alley of the Four Holy crowned Angels and the disposition of Sebastino Silvestri of Venice in his devotions to the Church. Handsomely mounted, matted, and framed to an overall size of 29 x 36. In fine condition.
