Description

Beautifully penned handwritten letter from Maxfield Parrish, forwarding "a preliminary study for a painting called 'Humpty Dumpty'"

ALS from Maxfield Parrish, two pages, 8 x 10.25, October 14, 1896. Addressed from Windsor, Vermont, a handwritten letter to illustrator Elisha Brown Bird, sending a study for a painting entitled ‘Humpty Dumpty,’ likely the work that became an illustration for L. Frank Baum's 1897 book, Mother Goose in Prose, and promising to send any available works to Will H. Bradley's short-lived magazine Bradley, His Book, and thanking Bird for sending two lithographic prints of his 1896 illustration entitled ‘The Red Letter.’ In full: “I herewith send you a preliminary study for a painting called 'Humpty Dumpty.' The reason I send it so much ahead of time is due to the fact that I must have it back again not a day later than the 15h of November, because it is to be exhibited in the coming exhibition at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and the above date will allow me to frame it — and no more. I would advise painting this in plain black ink with no addition of color. Presupposing, of course, that the drawing is of any use to you. I have heard nothing from Bradley as yet — As the August number of 'His Book' does not seem to be out, it is a matter of some speculation when the September number will make its appearance. However, when the time draws near to the 25th of November I shall write and ask him for such material as he may not be using and let you have it: though Heaven forbid that it find its way into your book. I thank you for the two copies of 'The Red Letter' you were kind enough to send me. Kindly let me know if this drawing will be of use to you, and if so, if you can return it before the 15th of November.” In fine condition.
