Description

French painter and sculptor (1901–1985) known for founding the 'Art Brut' movement. TLS in French, one page, 8.25 x 10.5, September 17, 1951. Letter to Mrs. Everett Somerville Brown, mentioning fellow artists Jean Fautrier and Wols, as well as art dealer Pierre Matissse (son of Henri). In part (translated): "I have good friendly relations with Fautrier and I find his paintings very interesting. I believe he is going to have an exhibition in New York at the Hugo Gallery next November. Wols died two weeks ago; he had been ill for a long time and was drinking terribly. I was very short of paintings this summer…These last two months I have worked very actively. I am preparing to take the boat to New York, with my wife and my friend Alfonso Ossorio and I hope to visit you in November. Pierre and Patricia Matisse are in Paris these days, but they are leaving by plane this week for New York." In fine condition. Accompanied by the partial original mailing envelope.
