Prolific American outsider artist and Baptist minister (1916–2002) who came to prominence with his 1980s album covers for R.E.M. (Reckoning) and Talking Heads (Little Creatures); several of his works, which range from sacred subjects to icons of popular culture, are displayed in the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Original mixed media artwork by Howard Finster accomplished in acrylic and felt tip pen on cut-out plywood, measuring 18˝ x 22˝, titled and signed at the bottom in black felt tip, "Guard Cat by Howard Finster." The pastor-turned-artist fills in the cat's body with the colorful faces of "Resting Souls," idiosyncratically identifying the work on the reverse as his 24,820th since 1976 ("24.000.820 works since 1976 by Howard Finster, From God to You, God Bless You, Jesus Saves From Hell, Come To Him"), and dating it June 18, 1992. In fine condition. Consignor notes that this was originally purchased from Rev. Finster at his home in Summerville, Georgia, in 1992.
