First president of South Vietnam (1901-1963) who was assassinated in the 1963 coup d'etat. Uncommon vintage matte-finish 9.5 x 11.75 portrait photo of the South Vietnam president, signed and inscribed in the lower border in black ink, "To Major General Aldon K. Sibley, in appreciation of his fine work in Vietnam, Ngo Dinh Diem, Saigon, Sept. 22, 1961.” The lower right bears the embossed seal of South Vietnam. In fine condition, with faint surface scratches and bends, visible at an angle, and a short tape-repaired tear to the bottom edge.
For his service in WWII, Sibley was awarded the Legion of Honor by the French and the Order of the British Empire by the United Kingdom. He would then go to Vietnam in 1960 as Deputy Chief, US Military Assistance Advisory Group. In 1961 Sibley was promoted to Major General and made Deputy Chief of Engineers of the US Army.
