Signer of the Declaration of Independence from Rhode Island (1727–1820). AES signed "Wm. Ellery," and four times within the text, "Wm. Ellery," on the reverse of a partial epitaph in Latin, one pages, 7.5 x 6.25, no date but circa 1764. In full: "Epitaph for Wm. Ellery, Esq. who died 1764—and for Ann, Wife of Wm. Ellery, son of Wm. Ellery, who died and was buried in Cambridge Sept. 1762—The first epitaph was drawn by it is believed the Rev. Ezra Giles then Minister of the Second Congregat'l Society in Newport, afterward President of Yale College Connecticut, and revised & corrected by Dr. Kneeland of Cambridge & James Lovell of Boston Massachusetts. The second epitaph was drawn by Dr. Kneeland as is believed." Ellery also annotates the page along the edge: "Epitaph for Wm. Ellery." In fine condition. A merchant and politician in colonial Rhode Island, William Ellery Sr. (1701–1764) served as deputy governor of the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations from 1748 to 1750.
