Description

Massachusetts lawyer (1731-1814) who served as one of the prosecutors of British soldiers during the Boston Massacre trial; he later signed the Declaration of Independence. ADS, signed "R. T. Paine," one page, 6.75 x 8.5, [December 1787]. Handwritten legal complaint filed by Paine, in part: "To the honorable the Justices of the Court of Common Pleas next to be held at Boston within and for the County of Suffolk on the first Tuesday of January in the year of our Lord seventeen hundred and eighty eight, James Lovel of Boston aforesaid Esq'r Collector of Import and Excise for the said County of Suffolk in behalf o fthes Commonwealth himself and all concerned, complains…the seized and took into his possession five barrels of Bottled Porter and that he has secured the same according to Law for Tryal. And the said James Lovel avers that the same five barrells of Porter was imported and brought into this Commonwealth, that it is not the growth or manufacture of any of the United States of America, that it was taken out of some vessel or float without a permit…and that no duty has been paid on the same." Docketed on the reverse in another hand, "Filed Decem. 19, 1787." In fine condition. Accompanied by a full letter of authenticity from PSA/DNA.
