Description

Partly-printed DS, signed "M. Weare" and "John Langdon," one page, 15 x 12.25, February 23, 1786. As governor of New Hampshire, John Langdon appoints William Wingate as "Second Lieutenant of the Fifteenth Company in the Second Regiment of Militia." Boldly signed at the conclusion in ink by New Hampshire's first governor, Meshech Weare, whose signature has been struck through, and signed below by John Langdon. Countersigned by Joseph Pearson as deputy secretary. The embossed white paper seal affixed at the upper left remains intact. In very good to fine condition, with scattered small areas of paper loss along the intersecting folds. Accompanied by a full letter of authenticity from JSA.

Meshech Weare served as the first governor of New Hampshire—a position then referred to as 'president'—from June 15, 1784 to June 1, 1785, and evidently signed these blank militia appointments en masse for later use. His successor, John Langdon, served four non-consecutive terms as governor of New Hampshire between 1785 and 1812. Langdon also served as a delegate to the Constitutional Convention, signed the United States Constitution, and was one of the first two United States senators from New Hampshire.
