Description

Signer of the Declaration of Independence from Maryland (1737-1832) who was the longest-lived among his colleagues. ALS signed “Ch. Carroll of Carrollton,” one page both sides, 8 x 10, June 16, 1803. Handwritten letter to Robert G. Harper of Annapolis, in part: "On Monday I got here and shall return to the Manor on Saturday. This family are all well, and join me in love to you &…the dear little boy. I sincerely hope you are well, and that Kilby's health is daily improvising. I suppose the general court will adjourn next Saturday….When will the court of appeals meet to do business? I presume not till the adjournment of the general court. Have all the judges of the court of appeals arrived at Annapolis?" Addressed on the integral leaf in Carroll's own hand. In fine condition, with a small area of seal-related paper loss to the integral address leaf. Accompanied by a full letter of authenticity from JSA.

The recipient, Robert Goodloe Harper, represented South Carolina in the House of Representatives from 1795 to 1801 and was later a senator from Maryland in 1816. He married Charles Carroll's daughter, Catherine, in 1800.
