Description

British surgeon (1827-1912) who pioneered the practice of sterile surgery, one of the most important medical advances of the day. ALS signed “Lister,” one page both sides, 4.5 x 7, black-bordered 12 Park Crescent, Portland Place letterhead, May 4, 1907. Handwritten letter to George Dean of the Lister Institute of Preventive Medicine in Harrow, seeking information on “the diameter of the largest leucocytes in normal human blood” and “for normal horse's blood. I should prefer having the measurement in fractions of an inch rather than in fractions of a millimetre, but that is, of course, not essential. I have no book giving the point in up to date knowledge.” In fine condition.

It was in 1891 that Lister helped to found the British Institute of Preventive Medicine, and he was its first chairman. One of its first important tasks was the manufacture of the diphtheria antitoxin. The Institute bought a farm at Sudbury for the purpose. The name was changed to the Jenner Institute in 1898, and in 1903 'much against Lister's inclination,' the Lister Institute. Dr George Dean, to whom this and the following letter are written, was in control of the Serum Department at the Jenner Institute and later Chief Bacteriologist at the Lister Institute.
