Description

Theologian, humanitarian, and physician (1875–1965) remembered for establishing a hospital in Lambarene, Gabon, and for receiving the 1952 Nobel Peace Prize for his philosophy of 'Reverence for Life.' Overhead layout print of the “Plan of the Hospital of Dr. Albert Schweitzer at Lambarene” in French Equatorial Africa (Gabon), 11.5 x 9, featuring a numerical guide listing 61 points of interest, including “New leper village,” “Consultative rooms and operating theatre,” and “Site for gravely ill patients,” signed and inscribed above in German in black ink (translated): “Helga Jorgenson, to the memory of the days in Lambarene, 1-20 May….Cordially, Albert Schweitzer.” Matted to an overall size of 14.5 x 12; window to reverse bears four period 2.25 x 2.24 photographs from Lambarene. In very good to fine condition, with light folds and creases, and some light staining.
