Letter to President Joseph Kasavubu of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, in full: "I am pleased that my Secretary of Labor, Arthur Goldberg, will be able to visit you in Leopoldville. Mr. Goldberg has my complete confidence, and I therefore hope you will feel free to discuss with him any questions you wish to take up. I thank you for receiving Mr. Goldberg, and in my own name and that of the American people, I send you friendly greetings and best wishes." In fine condition, with a light paperclip impression to the top edge. Accompanied by the original White House transmittal envelope.
The Congo gained independence from Belgium in June 1960; Joseph Kasa-Vubu became the new nation's first president in a coalition with Patrice Lumumba as prime minister. The Kennedy administration supported efforts to stabilize the newly independent republic amid political turmoil and Cold War tensions in the region.
