Description

ALS as president, two pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.25 x 7, Executive Mansion letterhead, March 22, 1886. Handwritten letter to Postmaster General William F. Vilas, in full: "The bearer of this is Mr. F. W. Bird of Mass. who is one of the 'good kind' and knows a great deal about Dedham and some other places. He wants to talk a very little and I want him to see the Dedham papers. He can tell about the Democratic support of Cummings. I have held his nomination till tomorrow to see what Mr. Bird will say after seeing the papers." In fine condition. Vilas served in two positions in President Cleveland's cabinet first as Postmaster General (1885–1888) and then as Secretary of the Interior (1888–1889).
