American writer (1903–1968) who is best known for his crime fiction; his story It Had to Be Murder served as the source for Alfred Hitchcock's 1954 classic Rear Window. ALS, three pages on two adjoining sheets, 7.25 x 7.5, personal letterhead, July 23, 1942. Handwritten letter to “Swanie,” his literary agent H. N. Swanson, in part: "I went down to the Lippincott office today, taking my copy of our 1-year contract along to show them. Mr. George Stevens telephoned this to Wing & made the situation known to him, in my presence. The situation therefore remains unchanged & as it was before: you have a 1-yr contract with me, you are my sole agent, & you have the book. Apparently they (Lippincott) had one of these automatic arrangements with an agent, as Simon & Schuster did. This has nothing to do with me, as my contract with you (Feb. 28th) antedates my Lippincott contract by several months. And even if it didn't, & I had no contract, you would still be my agent…Will you try to do something for me on it, Swanie—about selling 'Phantom Lady'—or do you think it has no picture possibilities, is that what is holding it up?" In fine condition.
Woolrich refers to his 1942 crime novel Phantom Lady, published under the pseudonym 'William Irish,' which would be adapted to film by Universal Pictures in 1944. Directed by Robert Siodmak and starring Franchot Tone, Ella Raines, and Alan Curtis, the film noir classic follows a young Manhattan secretary and her endeavors to prove that her boss did not murder his wife.
