Vintage matte-finish 6.25 x 9 photo of Admiral Nimitz in uniform with a large naval map in the background, signed and inscribed in fountain pen, "To Miss Helene Philbert, with best wishes, C. W. Nimitz, Fleet Admiral, USN.” Double-matted with a plaque, an ink signature of James Forrestal, the former Secretary of the Navy and Secretary of Defense, and an official printed telegram from the U.S.S. Dayton dated August 15, 1945, which contains Nimitz forwarding news from James Forrestal following Japan’s announcement of surrender to the Allies: “Fleet Admiral CW Nimitz transmits to the Pacific Fleet and Pacific Ocean Area with the greatest satisfaction and pride the following message from SECNAV: ‘My warmest congratulations on the successful completion of a great task x Please send to the commanders of the fleets and forces throughout the Pacific and all hands in their commands my personal congratulations and the deep pride which America has in their accomplishments x Let us keep in reverent recollection the memories of those of our comrades whose sacrifice has given us our freedom x James Forrestal.’” In overall fine condition, with some fading to Nimitz's handwriting. An impressive display commemorating the official closure to World War II.
