Original printed typescript of the “Speech of Newton D. Baker, Secretary of War,” at the Democratic State Convention, which was held in Columbus, Ohio, on August 17, 1920, with the cover sheet bearing a “Future Release” for the following day. Included with the speech is an official 5 x 8 sheet of White House stationery with the typed message: “The Secretary thinks the President and Mrs. Wilson would like to see the attached speech of Secretary Baker.” Baker’s speech, 30 pages, 8 x 13 (with two pages 8 x 10.5), focused on the League of Nations and the importance of the U.S. joining this international organization. As a prominent supporter of President Woodrow Wilson's vision, Baker argued that the League was essential for maintaining global peace and preventing future conflicts like World War I. In very good to fine condition, with rusty paperclip marks, creases, and edge tears.
