Description

Handwritten letter from Millet to one of his portrait subjects, complaining of spoiled oysters

French painter (1814–1875) known as one of the founders of the Barbizon school. ALS in French, signed “J. F. Millet,” one page both sides, 5.25 x 8.25, August 7, 1862. Addressed from Barbizon, an untranslated handwritten letter to Madame Louise-Antoinette Feuardent, complaining that he had become ill from the oysters that she had provided him, and the ones that hadn’t spoiled were difficult to open. He maintains a friendly, if somewhat caustic, tone to the end of his letter. In fine condition.

A significant letter that dates to the period when Millet finally obtained significant critical approbation; in 1867, the artist showed his works The Gleaners, The Angelus, and The Potato Planters at the Exposition Universelle. Additionally, the recipient of this letter, Louise-Antoinette Feuardent, was the wife of his lifelong friend Felix-Bienaime Feuardent, a clerk in the library at Cherbourg. Millet famously painted the portrait of Madame Feuardent in 1841 shortly after her marriage to Felix.
