Description

Churchill on the Labour Party and the cost of Socialist support: “The background of our daily life is made up of restrictions and deprivations. There is less bread and less milk, less fats, less bacon, less beer, less soap, less coal, fewer clothes, fewer cigarettes, higher railway fares, eternal queues and a famine in houses"

TLS signed “Winston S. Churchill,” two pages, 7.5 x 9.5, 28 Hyde Park letterhead, July 13, 1946. Letter to Lieutenant-Colonel John C. Lockwood, who was a successful conservative candidate for Parliament. In full: “I write to wish you success in your by-election contest. You need no words of mine to commend you to the electors of the Bexley Division to whom you are already well-known. The issue upon which the election is being fought is clean-cut. Can the people who voted Socialist a year ago honestly affirm that they are satisfied with the Government's management of their affairs? There can surely be only one answer to this question.

The background of our daily life is made up of restrictions and deprivations. There is less bread and less milk, less fats, less bacon, less beer, less soap, less coal, fewer clothes, fewer cigarettes, higher railway fares, eternal queues and a famine in houses. All the high hopes that the prospects of peace and the glowing promises of Socialist politicians held out to the country have been rudely shattered. It is idle for the Government to lay all the blame for these things on world conditions, for most of the effects could have been mitigated, if not avoided, by the exercise of greater wisdom and foresight by more competent administration, and by a less insistent concentration on State interference at the cost of personal freedom.

Recent experiences must have taught the men and women of Bexley the hollowness of Socialist promises and to beware of the dangers of Socialist planning. If so, they will do well to return you to Parliament as the candidate who stands for practical efficiency in the handling of their affairs and for the speediest possible restoration of British life and freedom.” In very good to fine condition, with overall creasing, small stains, and pin and file holes to the upper left corner. Accompanied by a custom clamshell presentation case.
