Very rare original program for the “First Annual Championship Games of the Amateur Athletic Union of the United States,” the first outdoor AAU championship, which was held “On the Grounds of the Detroit Athletic Club” in Detroit, Michigan, on September 19, 1888. The program, 36 pages, 7 x 10, lists the names of the games committee, the AAU executive board, AAU athletic clubs, event officers, and a full schedule of sporting events, which includes: 100 Yards Run, 120 Yards Hurdle, One Mile Walk, One Mile Run, 220 Yards Run, Two-Mile Bicycle Race, Running High Jump, Tug of War, Pole Vault, and more. The program also contains numerous amusing period advertisements. In very good to fine condition, with restored paper loss to the edges of the soiled covers; interior pages are generally fine.
