American politician from South Carolina (1749–1800) who was the youngest signer of the Declaration of Independence. ALS signed “Ed: Rutledge,” one page, 7.75 x 9.75, August 5, 1791. Handwritten letter to Sheriff Samuel Saxon, in part: "I find that the Lands at Ninety Six…sold at the Suit of Mr. Boudreaux, were knocked off to me—You will be pleased to make the Conveyances to Mr. Peter Freeman." Endorsed below by Robert Goodloe Harper and a justice of the peace. In fine condition. Encapsulated in a PSA/DNA authentication holder.
The town of Ninety Six, South Carolina, located about 60 miles south of Greenville, had become a prosperous village of about 100 settlers by the time of the American Revolutionary War. The first land battle of the war fought in South Carolina, the siege of Savage's Old Fields, took place at Ninety Six on November 19–21, 1775, and it became a Loyalist stronghold early in the war.
