TLS, two pages, 7.25 x 10.5, personal letterhead, December 9, 1986. Letter to Ron Nesen, vice president of news and special programs for the Mutual Radio Network, in part: "I am writing to invite you to participate with me in the Fifth Presidential Library Conference on the Public and Public Policy to be held at the Carter Presidential Center in Atlanta…Under the leadership of David Mathews, president of the Kettering Foundation, and Daniel Yankelovich, president of the Public Agenda Foundation, National Issues Forum is a national, nonpartisan network that conducts an annual series of forums, similar to town meetings, on public issues of national concern. Simply stated, the goal is to work toward common understandings through community discussion and then communicate those understandings to public officials…This fall and winter the National Issues Forum will convene more than 600 meetings with citizens all across the country to discuss this year's three topics: The Farm Crisis: Who's in Trouble, How to Respond; Immigration: What We Promised, Where to Draw the Line; Crime: What We Fear, What Can Be Done.
An essential step in the National Issues Forum program is to report the results of the forum discussions to policymakers and public leaders at the local, state, and national levels. That process of feedback begins at the Carter Presidential Library conference where I would like you to moderate a discussion between policy makers and citizens who participated in the forums on agriculture and the relationship of the public to policy formulation. While you probably have a number of questions about the conference, I hope you will agree to join us in providing a bipartisan platform for consideration of these issues of national concern." In fine condition.
