Description

American statesman (1801–1872) who served as secretary of state in the Lincoln administration and who was severely injured in an attack that was part of the assassination conspiracy. His greatest political achievement was the purchase of Alaska from Russia, derided by contemporary skeptics as 'Seward's Folly.' ALS, one page, 6.5 x 6, November 6, 1852. Handwritten letter to collector Joel H. Prescott, sending a book. In full: "I may have already complied with your wish heretofore, but if I have please hand the book now sent to some friend." Affixed to a larger album page and in fine condition.
