Description

Schweitzer declines a documentarian's request to film at his Lambarene hospital: "We are so taken up by the work to be done at the hospital that any cinematographic enterprise would disrupt this work"

Theologian, humanitarian, and physician (1875–1965) remembered for establishing a hospital in Lambarene, Gabon, and for receiving the 1952 Nobel Peace Prize for his philosophy of 'Reverence for Life.' ALS in French, one page, 8.25 x 10.75, January 4, 1951. Handwritten letter to Mr. Guy Barthelemy in Fontainebleau, France, humbly declining a request to film a documentary. In full (translated): "You are very kind to be thinking about making a documentary film about my hospital. Unfortunately, for reasons that are too long to be set forth with my poor hand, afflicted with writer’s cramp, I have already asked several companies who planned to shoot at my hospital to forego their plans. I could not take back my decision. We are so taken up by the work to be done at the hospital that any cinematographic enterprise would disrupt this work to be done day by day without interruption. If you want to come to Lambarene, live with us, have a rest here, shoot on the great exploration paths in the forest in the environs, you are cordially invited, and I can tell you that documentaries of the great woods are more vivid than those of the humdrum of a hospital, where there is not action that takes place in a palpable form. So accept the invitation with the simplicity with which it is offered to you." In very good to fine condition, with faint staining, and some trivial loss to the bottom edge.
