Scarce report entitled "Vaccination Against Paralytic Poliomyelitis: Performance and Prospects," from the Virus Research Laboratory, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, presented at the University of Michigan on April 12, 1955—the day that Salk's polio vaccine was pronounced safe to administer in the United States. Spiral-bound in its original stiff wrappers, 9 x 11.25, 16 pages plus 21 figures. Signed on the title page in black felt tip, "Jonas Salk, 1979." The report succinctly summarizes data from studies on the vaccine, documenting the efficacy of booster shots and antibody response in human and monkey trials.
In closing, the report suggests: "On the basis of all the evidence that has been gathered thus far, it would seem that antibody in the circulating blood could intercept virus invasion of the central nervous system. The question about which evidence is awaited is in regard to the level of antibody necessary for such an effect. This question should be answered, in part, by the field evaluation of vaccine effectiveness. If the assumption is made that the presence of demonstrable antibody in the serum will be sufficient to produce the desired effect, I would then propose that for the year 1955 vaccine be administered in two doses, separated by an interval of two to four weeks and that this should be followed by a third dose, not earlier than seven months later, but before the 1956 poliomyelitis season." In fine condition.
Beginning in 1948, Jonas Salk dedicated himself to polio research and to the development of a polio vaccine. After successful tests on laboratory animals in 1952, Salk began to test the vaccine on children. The year 1954 marked the famous, large-scale field tests of the vaccine: Salk tested the polio vaccine on about one million children, known as the polio pioneers. The vaccine was announced as safe on April 12, 1955.
