Scottish missionary and explorer (1813–1873) who 'disappeared' on an expedition to find the source of the Nile only to be famously rediscovered by Henry M. Stanley several years later. ALS, three pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.5 x 7.25, March 6, 1858. Handwritten letter to a gentleman, in full: "As I am not very well from some of the effects of old African fevers I am obliged to decline your kind invitation for tomorrow. I did not know when you called that I had the honour to be introduced to a relative of Mrs. Duncan whose books I have read with much interest." In very good to fine condition, with minor corner loss, and old mounting remnants on the back of the final page. Accompanied by a full letter of authenticity from JSA.
