Description

Colonial governor of Rhode Island (1717–1782) who, in May 1776, oversaw the colony's split from English rule some two months before the Declaration of Independence; he then served as first governor of the state of Rhode Island until 1778. Revolutionary War-dated partly-printed DS, signed “Nich'as Cooke,” one page, 12.5 x 7.75, November 16, 1775. As "Governor, Captain-General, and Commander in Chief, of and over the English Colony of Rhode-Island, and Providence Plantations, in New-England, in America," Nicholas Cooke appoints Smiting Potter as "Ensign of the First Company or Train'd Band of the Town of Richmond, in the County of King's County in the Colony aforesaid." Signed at the conclusion in ink by Governor Nicholas Cooke, and countersigned by Secretary Henry Ward. The embossed white paper seal affixed to the upper left remains intact. Affixed to a brittle mount and in good to very good condition, with foxing, small holes, tears, and minor edge loss.
