ALS in French, signed “C. Saint-Saens,” two pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.5 x 7, January 11, 1904. Untranslated handwritten letter addressed from the Spanish island city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. In fine condition.
Camille Saint-Saens formed a personal relationship with Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, an island he visited on seven occasions between 1889 and 1909, in an attempt to find relief for his weak lungs. Saint-Saens also penned two compositions dedicated to Gran Canaria, the Valse Cariote pour le piano, Op. 88 and Campanas de Las Palmas, which premièred in the Gran Canarian capital. The city awarded him the distinction of being an ‘adoptive son’ in 1900, when, in addition, a room in the Tirso de Molina Theatre was named after him.
