Description

Venezuelan pianist, soprano, composer, and conductor (1853–1917) who became an internationally renowned virtuoso pianist and was often referred to as the ‘Valkyrie of the Piano.’ Carreno was an early adopter of the works of one of her students, American composer and pianist Edward MacDowell, and also frequently performed the works of Norwegian composer and pianist Edvard Grieg. ALS signed “Teresa Carreno Tagliapietra,” three pages on two adjoining sheets, 5.5 x 6.75, Fairmont Hotel (San Francisco) letterhead, February 1, 1910. Handwritten letter to Miss Tozier, in full: “Many thanks for your kind favor of the 20th of last month which reached me here at this place. To my regret, it will be impossible to give you the lessons which you would like to have with me during the coming summer, as I will be concerting in Australia and do not expect to be back home in Berlin until a year from now.” Carreno adds a postscript: “May I ask you to be so good as to remember me most kindly to Miss Cryder? Many thanks in advance! And if it is not troubling you too much will you kindly give my dear love to my dear old friend Mrs. Bachert (Fanny Kellogg). Again, many thanks!” In fine condition.
