Important British composer (1913–1976), widely regarded as the greatest since Purcell, whose works include the opera Peter Grimes, the War Requiem, and scores of choral works. TLS, one page, 8 x 10, The Red House (Aldeburgh, Suffolk) letterhead, December 5, 1964. Letter to "Miss Armitage," ostensibly the soprano vocalist and violist Sapphire Armitage, in full: “It was very nice to hear from you; thank you for your kind letter. I was interested in your idea of making an opera out of ‘The Spire.’ I have not read it yet, although I am a great admirer of William Golding. I will try to get hold of a copy.” In fine condition. The 1964 novel The Spire by William Golding of The Lord of the Flies fame deals with the construction of a 404-foot-high spire loosely based on Salisbury Cathedral.
