Description

Composer and one of the most distinguished pianists of the Romantic era (1819–1896). She and her husband, composer Robert Schumann, were early champions of Johannes Brahms. ALS in German, one page both sides, 5.25 x 8.5, December 19, 1858. Handwritten letter to an unidentified lady, in full (translated): “It became clear yesterday that I must return home even before the [Christmas] feast, and thus will leave Vienna on Tuesday. I am sincerely sorry that I am now robbed of the pleasure to spend an hour or so with you, but I hope to return next Winter, and to make it up then.” In very good to fine condition, with light creasing and general light handling wear.

Clara began studying piano with her father, Friedrich Wieck, at age five, debuted with Leipzig's Gewandhaus Orchestra at nine, and was soon hailed throughout Europe for her precocious talent. In 1838, she was appointed kammervirtuosin to the Austrian court and was elected to Vienna's Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde. Marrying Robert Schumann in 1840, and in spite of growing family responsibilities, she taught at the Leipzig Conservatory, and toured frequently. Later, Clara was named head piano instructor at Frankfurt's Hoch Conservatory from 1878 (when it was founded) to 1892.
