Archive of 11 documents concerning the recording and promotion of the historic 'We Are the World' charity single, co-written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie in 1985 as a fundraising anthem, and recorded by the 'USA for Africa' supergroup of more than 40 legendary musicians, including Michael Jackson and his brothers, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Stevie Wonder Paul Simon, Billy Joel, Ray Charles, Diana Ross, Tina Turner, Kennedy Rogers, Waylon Jennings, and many more.
The archive is highlighted by documents signed by co-writers Jackson and Ritchie: first is a DS signed twice, "Michael Jackson," seven pages, 8.5 x 11, January 1, 1985, being a joint agreement between Michael Jackson and Lionel Ritchie, splitting the credit and songwriter's share 50/50, and directing all royalties to the foundation. In small part: "'We Are The World,' written and composed by Michael Jackson ('Jackson') and Lionel Ritchie ('Ritchie')…shall be licensed to Warner Bros. Music…The parties hereto agree that United Support For Artists For Africa shall have the perpetual right…to exploit the Composition in timed synchronization with the video recording of the Composition"; second is an "Inducement Letter," signed "Lionel Ritchie," two pages, 8.5 x 11, June 1, 1984, addressed to Diana Ross, regarding a loanout agreement "in connection with the production of a master recording embodying the performances of Diana Ross."
The nine other documents are releases signed by participants, including: Journey lead singer Steve Perry; Michael Jackson's brothers Tito Jackson, Jackie Jackson, Randy Jackson, and Marlon Jackson; Toto keyboardist Steve Porcaro; Prince-affiliated drummer Sheila E. ("Sheila Escovedo"); mixing engineer Humberto Gatica; and a secretary on behalf of Smokey Robinson. In these releases, the artists sign with the understanding that "as of January 28, 1985," the recording date for 'We Are the World,' "(100%) of the 'net proceeds' from the exploitation of the Master and the Special shall be donated directly or indirectly to victims of the famine in Africa, it being understood that some portion of such net proceeds (not to exceed fifteen percent [15%]) may be donated to the hungry in the United States." Written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie (with arrangements by Michael Omartian) and produced by Quincy Jones, 'We Are the World' is one of the best-selling singles of all time and an iconic song of the '80s. It ultimately won four Grammys, including Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal, and Best Short Form Music Video. In total, 'We Are the World' raised more than $80 million for humanitarian aid.
