Description

Advocate on behalf of the indigent mentally ill (1802–1887) who created the first generation of American mental asylums. During the Civil War, she served as a Superintendent of Army Nurses. ALS signed “D. L. Dix,” one page, 5 x 8, May 30, 1861. Handwritten letter replying to a "letter offering supplies of clothing," ostensibly for Union soldiers. In part: "There will in all probability be needed…large supplies of flannel shirts, drawers, & yarn socks." In fine condition.
