Description

Complete issue of The Cleveland Daily Leader from March 5, 1869, four pages, 21.5 x 27.25, with the front page reporting on the presidential inauguration of Ulysses S. Grant, with bold headlines reading: “The Inauguration,” “Grant Becomes President,” “The Scene of Unparalleled Republican Grandeur,” “Washington Thronged by Countless Thousands,” “Colfax Becomes Vice President,” “Organization of the Senate and House,” “Exciting Time in the House,” “The Inauguration Ball,” and more. The reporting continues with an insider’s vantage point of the day’s historic events: “Chief Justice Chase rose, holding Washington’s Bible in his hands, and walked towards General Grant, who rose, and at an intimation of Mr. Chase held up his hand and repeated the oath of office after the Chief Justice. As his hand was lowered, that grand shout of the thousands rang out again, thrilling all hearts with emotion that few will ever forget, and with it came the fast following thunders of the artillery.” In very good to fine condition, with handling wear, toning, and tape repairs to the back page.
