Description

Group of eight original vintage press and wire photos of members of Al Capone's family, circa 1931 to 1965, ranging in size from 9.5 x 6.5 to 10 x 8, including one photo of Al Capone, four photos of his son, Albert Francis 'Sonny' Capone, and three of his wife, Mae Capone, all with captions and news stamps on the reverse.

The highlight is the original vintage glossy 8 x 6 Associated Press wirephoto of Al Capone attending the American Derby at the Washington Park Track in Chicago in June 1931, encapsulated by PSA as an authentic "Type III" photograph. The caption affixed on the reverse notes: " 'Scarface appeared to enjoy the race to the utmost, leaving all worries to his heavy crew of bodyguards."

The three photos of Mae Capone show her in San Francisco during a trip to visit Al Capone on Alcatraz in 1938, with two showing her onboard the Alcatraz Island boat. The four photos of Sonny Capone portray him playing golf in Miami in 1939, getting married in 1941, visiting Mount Olivet Cemetery to attend Al Capone's burial in 1947, and pleading guilty to petty larceny in 1965—charged with stealing flashlight batteries and two bottles of aspirin from a supermarket, a far cry from the gangland crimes of his father. In overall very good to fine condition, with expected wear and various affixed inventory barcodes.

The Marc and Mary Perkins Collection.
