AQS signed "Oscar Wilde," on two off-white 6.5 x 4 album pages adjoined at the center, June 26, 1882. Wilde quotes a stanza from his poem 'The Garden of Eros,' in full: "Spirit of Beauty! tarry yet a-while, / They are not dead, thine ancient votaries, / Some few there are to whom thy radiant smile / Is better than a thousand victories." In fine condition, with light show-though from old mounting residue along the back edges.
Oscar Wilde's poem The Garden of Eros is a lush and evocative work that explores themes of beauty, art, and the fleeting nature of life. Drawing on classical references with numerous allusions to Greek mythology, it celebrates the ideal of aestheticism, where art and beauty reign supreme over moral constraints. The poem also reflects Wilde's admiration for the hedonistic and artistic life, invoking a sense of longing for a lost paradise.
