Original preliminary design photo of Elton John that was taken by photographer Ed Caraeff and used on the front cover of his 1972 album Honky Chateau. The image, which is printed on sepia-toned cloth paper, measures 13.75 x 9.5 and is affixed to a same-size cardstock board, the reverse of which bears two photography credit stamps for Caraeff. In fine condition. Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Tracks.
Caraeff recalled: ‘Since I’d already met Elton and Bernie in London when I was hired by Three Dog Night to join their European tour, I had a good connection. Three Dog Night covered an Elton/Bernie song, Lady Samantha, on their first album, and they both came to the London show to thank them. After the show they asked if we’d like to hear the brand new first Crosby Stills Nash album at Dick James Music Studio: we did. This close-up head shot was taken while he was sitting on the edge of his bed at the Continental Hyatt House on the day Elton arrived in LA for the first Troubadour gig. I selected that image to print on my newly acquired cloth-based photo paper which I then sepia-toned. I was a photographer who did all my own darkroom work and made all my own colour and B&W prints. When I showed the sepia cloth print to Elton it became the cover of his ‘Honky Château’ album.’
Originates from the collection of artist and sleeve designer Mike Ross, who was involved in various design projects commissioned by Sir Elton John.
