Description

Band-signed indemnity agreement from the Jimi Hendrix Experience, who, the following day, played their legendary set at the 1968 New York Rock Festival

Desirable DS, one page, 8.5 x 11, August 22, 1968. Legal document between the Jimi Hendrix Experience and the law firm Abrahams, Gold & Hecht of New York, which reads: “We hereby jointly and severally agree to indemnify your firm from any and all claims which may be asserted against you or any of you in respect of the receipt and disbursement by you of any monies paid in respect of the Jimi Hendrix Experience, its personal appearances, and royalties of every kind and description.” Signed at the conclusion in bold black felt tip by Jimi Hendrix, Noel Redding, and Mitch Mitchell. In fine condition. Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Tracks.

On August 23, 1968, one day after the contract was signed, the Jimi Hendrix Experience appeared live on stage at the New York Rock Festival at the Singer Bowl in Flushing Meadow, Queens, New York. The three-day New York Rock Festival holds the distinction of having one of the greatest musical line-ups in rock history—the kickoff show included the likes of The Doors and The Who, the second show was highlighted by Janis Joplin, Soft Machine, and The Jimi Hendrix Experience, and the final featured The Rascals and The Vagrants.

Billboard Magazine's Fred Kirby, who attended the Jimi concert, wrote in part: 'The Jimi Hendrix Experience gave one of its finest local performances to date to complete a strong program. From the opening of 'Are You Experienced?' every number hit the mark. An unusual aspect of the set was the singing along by members of the audience, at first it was only slight, but by the time they performed 'Purple Haze' it was widespread. Hendrix, one of the top echelon of today's pop guitarists, stole the show. The vastness of the Singer Bowl (which Jimi drew over 18,000 people) seemed congenial to the trio's highly amplified sound. Whether erect or on the floor, calm or physically assaulting the amplifiers, his playing was outstanding. And Hendrix, who has jammed with many other groups, clearly relishes playing, especially as well as he played on August 23rd.'
