Description

"There is nothing more important than the reestablishment of discipline"—letter from the arrested king following his disastrous flight to Varennes in 1791

King of France (born 1754) from 1774 to 1792. In the wake of increasing unrest that developed into full-fledged revolution, Louis and his queen, Marie Antoinette, were executed in 1793. Revolution-dated LS in French, signed “Louis,” one page, 7.25 x 9, October 20, 1791. Addressed from Paris, a letter from King Louis XVI while under house arrest following his unsuccessful flight to Varennes in late June. Sent to an unidentified recipient, cryptically referred to as “B” on the reverse of the second integral page, in full (translated): "The sentiments that you express to me, sir, are those that I expected from you. I called on you to command the French troops because I believed that I had found in you a distinguished soldier and an excellent citizen. Continue to justify my choice and to show yourself worthy of the nation’s trust. There is nothing more important than the reestablishment of discipline. I am constantly concerned with this, and I have charged M. de Narbonne, who is going to visit the borders, with collecting very detailed information in this regard, so that I may be in a position to take effective measures.” In very good to fine condition, with some light soiling and foxing, and expert professional reinforcements to the intersecting folds. A scarce and pivotal letter from King Louis XVI, signed shortly after his arrest and subsequent detainment at Tuileries and less than a year before the abolition of the French monarchy. His majesty, and that of his queen consort, Marie Antoinette, would be tried and executed in 1793.
