Description

President Truman recognizes a Red Army captain's heroism during World War II: "He courageously and skillfully led his troops, surrounded by the enemy, in a manner which enabled them to break the hostile defense and force the retreat of the German forces to the border"

DS as president, one page, 8 x 10.5, no date. Citation for Legion of Merit for the Degree of Legionnaire, in full: "Captain Dmitry Egorovitch Savotin, 106th Regiment, 311th Infantry Division, Red Army, commanded an infantry battalion from 1 January to 2 May 1945. He courageously and skillfully led his troops, surrounded by the enemy, in a manner which enabled them to break the hostile defense and force the retreat of the German forces to the border of Germany. He continued personally to direct the westward offensive of his unit and helped establish contact with the American forces at the Elbe River. The tactical skill, leadership and initiative displayed by Captain Savotin reflect high credit upon himself in the military service of his country." In fine condition, with faint paperclip impressions to the top edge.
