TLS, one page, 8 x 10, May 4, 1956. Letter to publisher Tadeusz Murek, in full: “Thank you very much for your letter of April 18. Your press was not quite accurate about my articles in the SUNDAY TIMES. The SUNDAY TIMES asked me to do one article, which I did, and they then divided it into two parts and there is no question of stopping anything that I wrote. Neither the Roman Curea nor the Communist Party have any influence on the English press!
About The Living Room: you certainly have my permission to go ahead with a translation for Poland, but in due course to regularise matters, you should write to my agent, Dr. J. van Loewen, 81 Shaftesbury Avenue, London, W.1., telling him that I have given you permission and arranging terms with him. I will ask him to give any terms his special consideration.
The Quiet American is being made into a film by an American company so I don't think one should discuss any dramatisation at the present time. All dramatic rights are out of my hands. My second play still hangs fire because I want to re-write the second act and I don't see any chance of getting down to it before the summer.
I do hope you get your passport satisfactorily to Berlin and I also hope that next year you will be able to visit England and that I shall be able to return the hospitality I received from you in Stalinogrod. Dobraczynski sent me a copy of his essays on the Catholic School here, but of course I cannot read them. I am just off to Canada where my daughter is becoming an immigrant and I hope is going to breed a good herd of Herefordshire cattle. It is a great thing having space around one.” In fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope.
